Editor’s Choice – Coleman Skydome XL 10 Person
Coleman is easily one of the best brands for affordable and simple tents that are high quality enough to last lots of family camping adventures. They call this Skydome XL a ‘tent palace’ that’s perfect for spring, fall, and summer camping trips.
Setup is simple whether you’re a beginner camper or seasoned veteran because this car camping tent has pre-attached poles and a color-coded rain fly that sets up in under five minutes with two people. With a 6.5 foot center height, even the tallest person in your group can stand up straight. Near vertical walls make the interior seem even larger, and the wide design allows for three queen air mattresses. Two doors make it easy to move these big pieces of gear in and out of the tent.
Coleman is rarely truly upfront about their weather-proofing besides that they use their WeatherTec system that helps keep water out using a tub-like floor, inverted and taped seams, and welded corners. It has been tested to withstand winds up to 35 mph, so it will provide ample protection for casual camping conditions. Awnings over the door make your entrances more dry and the large rain fly provides lots of coverage.

Bushnell Shield Series 9
This Bushnell Shield Series is part of a line of instant cabin tents that set up in as little as 60 seconds, so you can focus more on the fun parts of camping. Although it says it sleeps nine campers, it can sleep ten maximum so it still falls into our best ten person tents category.
The fabric is a water-repellent material with full-taped, sealed seams, but Bushnell doesn’t provide a waterhead rating so we don’t know how truly waterproof it is. It also uses Bushnell’s Heat Shield Technology, which uses a special reflective coating to make the tent darker and cooler on the inside by blocking UV rays.
Just like the Coleman Skydome XL above, the shape of this tent allows for three queen air mattresses and has a generous max height (6.5 ft.) with near vertical walls. The rainfly only covers up the uppermost part of the tent, but still provides an awning over the doorway. The mesh windows zip shut for privacy and rainy weather protection or zip open for air circulation. We can appreciate the oversized vestibule that allows for some small gear storage, and we also like how there’s a side access door to give you an additional entrance.
Our favorite part about this tent (and all Bushnell products) is their lifetime warranty. If their products fails you, they will repair or replace the product at no cost to you. They don’t even require a receipt and the warranty is transferrable, so there’s no hoops to jump through when you need their help.

Zempire EVO TXL V2 Tent
Zempire is a newer company based in New Zealand that just started selling their tents at REI. They are a small business that makes some seriously awesome tents that we couldn’t recommend more. While the price tag starts higher than any other tents on this list, it’s built to last and be used, and the features make this tent the closest thing to home away from home.
The first thing you’ll notice about this tent is that it doesn’t use any traditional tent poles, and instead uses an air beam technology that uses a SeroLink frame system to support the tent. This means you don’t have to worry about poles bending or snapping since the tent relies on air filled tubes to stand upright. Setup is still super quick and easy (and even faster than some of the other best 10 person tents on this list) using a dual-action air pump that only takes a couple minutes.
Everything about this tent makes it ready for whatever Mother Nature has to throw at it, whether that be sun, rain, wind, hot, or cold. Tape-sealed seams, UV treated materials, PVC windows, and an over-the-top 6,000mm waterhead rating keep out moisture and harsh rays while staying upright and strong.
While this tent is rated as an 8+ person tent, it could really sleep more based on the square footage. The graphic showing their sleeping arrangements only puts six campers in the main sleeping quarters, but doesn’t take into consideration the ample living space inside the tent. This extra space is separated by an optional room divider and it measures 100 x 171 inches, making it perfect for sleeping several more people.
The features on this tent are endless, and it would take a whole page to get them all out, so it’s worth looking at the specs on this tent and getting a feel for all that it has to offer. Tinted skylights, three doors, an extended awning, three layer windows, multiple storage pockets, and so much more make this tent the perfect home in the wilderness.

- Waterhead rating: 6000mm
- Material: 150D polyester canopy and rain fly, 140gsm polyethylene floor
- Highlight: Incredibly well-rounded tent with the most features we’ve seen in one unit.
Pros
- Tons of features that make this the most well-rounded tent we’ve seen
- High waterhead rating
- Uses air beams instead of tent poles
Cons
- Most expensive tent on this list
White Duck Avalon Bell Tent 20′
White Duck Outdoors is one of the leading brands of canvas tents and they’re a personal favorite of ours. They make some seriously high quality tents with awesome features, and they would be a great addition to your gear closet if you’re looking for something that will last a lifetime.
This particular tent is their Avalon Bell tent with a 20 foot diameter, which can comfortably sleep ten campers. It’s a canvas bell-shaped tent, meaning it uses a center pole to support the core like a teepee, but the bottom of the tent sides go straight down instead of continuing to flare out. This gives more livable space within the large tent and also allows for weather-proof lower windows that provide ample amounts of ventilation while still staying bug-free and dry.
White Duck uses a proprietary DynaDuck canvas fabric that’s thick yet breathable. It’s treated with PFC-free, eco-friendly waterproof and UV resistant finishes so it’s ready for all kinds of rainy weather and adverse conditions. You can also purchase an optional fire retardant finish if that’s important to you. The removable floor is a heavy-duty polyvinyl sheet that can be zippered in or out, and the center pole and door pole are thick galvanized steel for solid support.
This tent is a true four-season camping tent not only because of its thick cotton canvas that holds in warmth, but also because it does have a built-in stove jack, which is the fire-proof hole in the upper part of the tent that allows for a wood burning stove chimney. If you are interested in learning how to hot tent in winter, we’ve written a whole hot tent essentials post that breaks it all down for you.
Even if you don’t plan on using this tent in the wintertime, it makes a great summer camping tent with lots of ventilation (including two upper vents for high-low air circulation) so you can stay cool on warm days or close everything up on chilly nights. Between the double-stitched seams, reinforced corners, and the proprietary shock-absorbing grounding system to stand up to harsh weather conditions, this tent is built to withstand all that camping has to throw at it. It could even be used as a great tent for glamping.
Specifications
- Weight: 117 lbs.
- Floor Space: 20′ diameter
- Peak height: 134 inches (11ft. 2in.)
- Door Height: 78 inches (6ft. 6in.)
- Poles: galvanized steel
- Material: 10.10 oz. proprietary Army Duck Cotton Canvas
- Highlight: A super high quality canvas tent that has lots to offer in all four seasons.
Pros
- Made of waterproof army duck cotton canvas that’s also breathable
- Built to work perfectly in all four seasons
- Comfortably sleeps 10 campers
Cons
- More expensive but is built to last a lifetime
Ozark Trail 11 Person Cabin Tent
Ozark Trail is a private label brand that’s owned by Walmart, so you can see how there would be a lot of focus on casual campers who want an affordable tent to enjoy the outdoors. Their 11-person tent is also sold on Amazon, and it has over 1,000 reviews and is rated 4.5 stars. This Ozark Trail tent would be great for families with a couple of small kids, as the included back room sleeps three people and gives the kids their own space, plus an included room divider can make this space turn into a three room home away from home.
This large tent is a perfect square that measures 14 x 14 feet and it has a large peak height of 6 ft. 4 in. The straight walls make for lots of interior space, and we really like that they added an awning for weather protection and shade on the front of the tent. Add on the mesh ceiling and six large, mesh windows and you have a spacious tent with lots of ventilation.
One of the biggest benefits of this tent is that it’s super easy to setup and is a ‘near-instant’ tent that’s under two minutes. The poles are pre-attached, so you just have to slide them into their slots. The main downside of this tent is the limited description, so there’s no information on waterhead rating or how strong the fabric is. The company claims that the tent can withstand wind and rain, but there’s no proof. Because of this, we wouldn’t recommend planning on using this tent if you’re consistently exposed to rainy, windy, or wet conditions.
Specifications
- Weight: 38 lbs.
- Floor Space: 14 x 14 feet
- Peak height: 76โ (6ft. 4in.)
- Poles: Pre-attached poles with near instant setup
- # of Rooms: 1-3
- # of Windows: 6
- Warranty: 6 months
- Highlight: Affordable tent that’s a great option for families
Pros
- Quick and easy setup with pre-attached poles
- Large mesh windows + tall max height makes for an airy and spacious tent
- Room divider and extra back room can make a three room tent
- Cabin tent with a tall peak height
Cons
- No information on materials or water-proofing
CORE 10 Person Tent
This 10 person tent by CORE is the most affordable option on our list but it still offers all the necessities like a spacious interior with near vertical walls and plenty of mesh windows for ventilation. It even has adjustable floor vents that draw in cool air from the ground and push hot air out through the mesh ceiling. Setup is quick and easy, and the two large D-shaped door allows you to fit in 2-3 queen air mattresses.
While this tent does use some fiberglass poles, they are only located in the upper cross-sections of the tent across the mesh ceiling. The upright poles are steel, which offer more support and strength, especially during windy conditions. Overall, this large tent is quick to setup, easy to use, and offers ample space for the whole group. There’s even a room divider that can separate the interior space into two rooms.
CORE states that this tent is equipped with “water resistant PU coated fabric and taped seams to help keep moisture out” but does not give any specific information on waterhead rating. Therefore, we cannot be sure about how water-resistant this tent really is. Because of this, we would recommend this budget tent for family camping trips where the weather is going to be ideal with limited amounts of cold and rainy weather.
Specifications
- Weight: 35.5 lbs.
- Floor Space: 14 x 10 feet
- Peak height: 86 inches (7ft. 2in.)
- Poles: Fiberglass and steel
- # of Rooms: 1-2
- Material: 68D polyester canopy and rain fly, polyethylene floor
- Warranty: 1 year
- Highlight: Over 7 feet of peak height and lots of windows for under $250.

- Most affordable tent on this list
- 1 year warranty
- Room divider can make two rooms
- Quick setup in only a few minutes
- Steel upright poles
- Cabin tent with tall peak height

How We Tested, Reviewed, And Rated These Tents
We love outdoor gear and recommend equipment that adds value to our outdoor adventure. We know and understand the importance of having gear worth every penny, so we thoroughly research and test every product we recommend. No matter how we procure an item, our goal is to remain as unbiased as possible, and we put it to the test against its competitors to find the best and worst features.
We also understand that each adventurer is different, and our favorite 10 person tent may not be yours. Thatโs why we rate and review a wide variety of products currently available, so you can see a breakdown of all the features and pick whatโs best for you and your situation. We donโt recommend anything we wouldnโt personally use, so whether youโre looking for the highest quality, an affordable price, superior weather resistance, a particular brand, or any other desirable feature, thereโs sure to be a tent on our list thatโs perfect for you.
Thing to Consider When Choosing the Best 10 Person Tent
When shopping around for the best 10 person tent, here are a few things to take into consideration: waterhead rating, materials, max height, and ease of setup.
Waterhead Rating
Waterhead rating is a measurement of how water-proof or water-resistant a material is, and this is an important number when it comes to tents. A water-resistant tent will resist water, but will ultimately leak. A water-proof tent is supposed to resist rain and should continue you to keep you dry during a rainstorm. Obviously, water-proof is preferred over water-resistant, but we found that a lot of the larger and more affordable tents on the market aren’t water-proof.
In fact, a lot of the tents we found that are less than about $400 did not provide a waterhead rating. In our minds, this means they aren’t proud of this rating, otherwise there would be no reason to disclose this information in the product specs. We would encourage you to be very skeptical of any camping tent that doesn’t list a waterhead rating, as it could leave you at risk of getting wet and ruining your camping trip.
So what is the minimum waterhead rating a tent should have? The smallest number we would recommend in a tent is 1200mm. Ideally, more than that is better, with 1500mm even being more preferable. Anything 1000mm or below would not be an option in our books, and we wouldn’t recommend it for our readers either.
There are a couple exceptions to this rule, the main one being canvas tents. They won’t typically have a specific waterhead rating, but they will be treated with coatings that make them waterproof. This is only from reputable brands like White Duck, which is why we’ve included them in our list above.
Part of waterproofing is the materials, but part of it is also taped seams, a tub-like floor, and reinforced corners that are meant to protect the weaker points from letting moisture in. All tents should have features like this.
Materials
Waterhead ratings is just the beginning of tent materials, and we should also cover fabrics and pole materials. Tent fabrics are usually a polyester material, and the rating is called denier. For example, a 60-denier polyester fabric would be a pretty good level of denier, with higher numbers being stronger and longer lasting. Just like how a waterhead rating should be displayed, so should the denier, and we would be skeptical of any tents that weren’t up front about this information.
For tent poles, the preferred material is always going to be aluminum or some type of metal. You’ll see this in higher quality tents, but it will be one of the first corners that are cut in making a tent more affordable. While it’s not a deal-breaker to have tent poles made of fiberglass, keep in mind that they are much more likely to break, especially if they are put under stress (like wind) or are exposed to colder temperatures.
Shape
There are a few different tent shapes on our list above: cabin, dome, and tunnel. There are pros and cons to each, so let’s take a look at the different types.
Cabin tents are tall and have near vertical walls, which means they usually have a higher peak height than other tent shapes. This is great for campers who want lots of standing space, but the upright walls are also prone to catching the wind. This makes cabin tents more ideal for people who usually camp in ideal weather conditions. There’s even such things as an instant cabin tent, which sets up in as little as 90 seconds – the Bushnell 9 is an example. Some of the other cabin tents on this list are the Ozark Trail 11 Person cabin tent and the Core 10 Person Tent.
Although dome tents are some of the most popular tents on the market, there’s only one dome tent on this list. Even then, it’s more like some extended dome tents in the sense that it’s elongated for extra sleeping capacity. The Editor’s Choice Coleman is a dome tent, and you can see how the walls are more contoured as compared to a cabin style tent. A dome tent is better suited for strong winds and heavy rains since the contoured walls are more likely to deflect wind rather than catch it like a sail.
The third shape is a tunnel tent, and there’s only one on the list above: the Zempire EVO. It’s elongated in shape, and would be great for someone who wants lots of headspace while still having a contoured shape that can be pointed into the wind.
We also have one bell tent on our list, the White Duck Avalon. While canvas tents are a little out of the ordinary, the materials are super durable and built to last a lifetime. It could be the last camping tent you ever buy. If you’re interested in other similar tents, we have the best bell tents all in one place.
‘Cry Once’
These differences in preferred materials versus the material we found on most of the tents in our search leads to an important discussion: do you buy a more expensive tent that will last longer or do you spend less money and hope that it will withstand the conditions you throw at it? We have a personal philosophy when it comes to camping gear, and it’s called “cry once.
When you purchase a cheaper tent, you inherently run the risk that it will break or malfunction within the first season or two of use. Then you will have to buy another one, but since you already spent money on something that broke, you don’t want to splurge and spend even more money. So you buy something more affordable again. This tent also breaks in the first couple years, so you have to purchase another one.
If you go back to the beginning and spend more money on a high quality tent that’s meant to last, you would ultimately spend less money in the long run, as well as save yourself a lot of headache. While there’s always a risk of products failing, a high quality tent has a lower chance, and most of them come with well-rounded lifetime warranties that protect you in case that does happen.
So we say “cry once” and spend the money on something that’s built to withstand the rugged camping life, and you will be happy you did. We aren’t saying you have to splurge on the Zempire tent above just for the sake of it (although it is super awesome!), but we would recommend getting something with aluminum poles, a high waterhead rating, and something from a reputable outdoor brand that comes with a lifetime warranty.
Capacity
If you’re purchasing a family camping tent based on capacity, we must always first discuss how many people would normally go on a camping trip. Take that number and add two, as sizing up by at least two campers will give you some flexibility with the space and will make everyone more comfortable. You could size up even more if you wanted more room inside the tent, or if you plan on using air mattresses that take up more space.
This means that a 10 person tent would be more ideal for 6-8 people and not more unless you want to be sleeping shoulder to shoulder in close quarters. If you are consistently camping with ten people, we would recommend sizing up to something even larger, or encourage you to consider getting two smaller tents instead of one oversized one.
Max Height
All of the products on our best 10 person tents list above have a very generous max height, with all of them being well over six feet. If being able to stand up straight and move about a camping tent with near vertical walls is important to you, then you’ve come to the right place. If you have some tall campers, check out more camping tents for tall people.
That being said, tall cabin tents like all the ones above catch wind like a sail, and you should be prepared to use strong tent stakes on all corners and guyouts every time you go camping. If you are consistently exposed to high winds and heavy rain, it would be worth downsizing to something more contoured that would better handle adverse conditions. A lot of those smaller camping tents would also have a full-coverage rainfly over the tent body, which would overall provide better protection from rainy weather and strong winds.
Ease of Setup
We’ve purposely only included camping tents that are easy to setup, but be wary of larger tents that have complicated designs. The tents above set up in a few minutes or less despite their size, and this is a big benefit of the specific models above.

FAQ
What is the best 10 person tent?
We selected the Coleman Skydome XL for the best 10 person tent because it perfectly balances affordability, features, and quality. We’ve also included some other tents like the White Duck Avalon canvas tent and several more.
How many people would fit in a 10-person tent?
We always recommend subtracting two from the designated capacity, which means that a 10-person tent would ideally sleep 8 people or less. This gives you more space to move around and store gear inside your tent, as filling the recommended capacity would leave everyone sleeping in very close quarters.
What is the best tent for a large family?
Any of these 10 person tents would be great for a large family camping tent. They offer the size you would need and the features you like, while not being overly expensive. They do vary in price, but they also vary greatly in features and the type of material used. Pick the family camping tent that’s best suited for your typical use.
Conclusion
No matter which 10 person tent you end up purchasing, we hope that it will bring you joy and numerous family camping adventures for years to come. Whether you choose the longevity of a White Duck canvas tent, the affordability of our Editor’s Choice Coleman, the exciting features of the Zempire, or anything else on this list, we don’t think you could go wrong. Just take into consideration your typical use in relation to our ‘things to consider’ above, and pick a camping tent that’s best suited for you.
